DACA Works

Yunuen Alvarado is a freshman at Texas State University majoring in Journalism & Mass Communication with a minor in Diversity Studies. Yunuen is from Queretaro, Mexico but has called Austin, Texas her home for many years. Yunuen hopes to pursue her master’s degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education and is also thinking about law school in order to become a pro bono immigration attorney. Her passions include social justice, advocating for common sense immigration reform, and creative writing. Yunuen hopes to keep on working in the field of community organizing, as she is extremely passionate about informing her community about their rights and providing resources for them. Yunuen also aspires to make the world a better place and to inspire other DREAMers to fight for their rights as well.

Araceli is from Dallas, Texas, and plans to move out-of-state for law school after graduating in the Spring of 2019. Her passions include golden retrievers, mashed potatoes, and Legally Blonde. She aspires to run for Governor one day and understands that the experience she is getting here at Texas State is an essential stepping stone into her future. She is also not related to Julianne.


about the writer pic Julianne Castillo is a sophomore at Texas State University majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Political Communications. Julianne is from Kingwood, Texas, and after she graduates, plans on going to law school to become an attorney. In her free time, she enjoys watching shows on Netflix and watching cat videos on YouTube.

John P. Espinosa is a Junior at Texas State University majoring in Political Science and minoring in Geography. 2017 portraitJohn is from Austin, Texas. He currently serves as a PACE MAC Peer Mentor in the Minority Male Initiative where he mentors freshman Hispanic males. John has also been involved in the Texas Civil Rights Project, the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum, the Austin Independent School District, and the Texas Boys State program. After graduating, John wants to pursue a JD/Masters of Public Policy dual degree and wants to run for public office in the near future.

Lizzy Harris is a sophomore Picat Texas State University majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Honors Studies. She is from Houston, Texas and enjoys international travel and exploring the amazing things and opportunities San Marcos, Texas has to offer on a daily basis. Lizzy plans to attend law school in the Fall of 2019 and has thoroughly enjoyed learning about the free speech and free press issues around the world and becoming a more knowledgeable and informed student.

Holly Hearn “is a pretty great human being,” according to some people who know her. She is IMG_3750from Houston, Texas but currently considers San Marcos home. As a sophomore at Texas State University she is set to graduate in the spring of 2019 with a major in Public Relations and a double minor in Political Science and Honors. Holly has a bearded dragon named Oliver she wants to travel the world with post-graduation.

John Hernandez came to Texas State University by waSelfy of Queens, New York and Bogota, Colombia. John majors in journalism and minors in writing, which means double the punishment of staring at blank Microsoft Word documents. On the same note, John tortures himself by being a Mets fan, but he unwinds through his photography.  John cut down a large pine tree in AmeriCorps, his greatest achievement to date, and he currently works at a startup in downtown Austin. You can usually catch him playing trivia or at a show in East Austin.

Skyler JenningsIMG_4301 is a sophomore at Texas State University majoring in journalism with a minor in honors studies. Skyler is from Katy, Texas, and plans to graduate in spring 2019. She spends her free time obsessing over anything One Direction, Taylor Swift or 5 Seconds of Summer. She currently has three tattoos, works at a dog kennel and loves to code. When she graduates, she hopes to work in online journalism and use her coding skills.

Kristina Jingling is a senior at Texas State University with a major in public relations and a minor in leadership studies. Originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, Kristina moved to Leander, Texas in 201117103539_10155140333706742_16465405277228622_n and considers herself to be an honorary Texan at heart. When she’s not in class, she can be found planning meetings for Social Media Club, which she is president of, or being lazy with her dog, Frank. Kristina will be graduating early in December 2017 and would ideally like to work in the social media field for a company in the Central Texas area.


Kiley Jones is undefinable. However, if one had to define her, many would say that she is hilarious. Truly, one of a kind. The advertising industry – which is what she is planning on going into for the rest of her life – is lucky to have such a shining star. Like her colleague above, Kiley Jones is Vice President of Social Media Club! The two are best friends. Although many do not know of Kiley Jones in 2017, soon many will. That is how extraordinary she is.

Taeler Kallmerten is a junior at Texas State University 14633599_10205040767618307_1791481912066064991_omajoring in Electronic Media with a minor in Honors Studies. Taeler has been to Canada, Nicaragua and plans to travel to Spain, and the United Kingdom soon. Her future plans are to travel more and further her education in video production. She is currently learning Russian and plans to study German abroad after her graduation. Taeler is currently working on her first documentary film.

Amy Lane is a junior at Texas State University majoring in Political Science and Screenshot_20170426-125106-269x256minoring in Honors Studies. She lives in Austin and has three children and two rescue mutts. She enjoys taekwondo training with her kids, hiking, and brunching with her friends when she has free time. Amy plans to apply to law school when she graduates in the spring of 2018. She is passionate about environmental issues and civil rights, and hopes to practice environmental or civil rights law one day.

He enjoys listening to music, watching movies, playing golf and going to concerts. He plans to live in the central Texas area and work in corporate public relations. Grant is passionate about the free speech rights of individuals throughout the world and heavily values the importance of continued free exchange of information and legal education in the age of technology.


Jazmin Pantoja is a junior at Texas State University majoring in Political Science and minoring in History. Jazmin plans to graduate in the fall of 2018. She enjoys hiking, traveling and spending time with her friends and family. When she graduates she plans on going to law school and joining the United States Air Force.

Leela Schooler is a junior at Texas State University majoring in mass communication withLKS a minor in Honors Studies. She is from Big Spring, Texas, but San Marcos, Texas is slowly becoming her home. She enjoys exploring San Marcos, Netflix and petting every dog that she meets. She is passionate about women’s rights, practicing self-love and building other women up (and Harry Potter, of course). After graduation, Leela is planning on obtaining her master’s, and is hoping to use the skills she gains in mass communication to help educate women on their rights and resources.


Maddie Walling is a Dallas girl through and through, but considers San Marcos her temporary home! Maddie is a senior at Texas State University studying public relations. In her free time Maddie hangs out with the casts of Friends and Grey’s Anatomy via her Netflix account, you can also catch her poolside or enjoying a cup of coffee on a gloomy day. Post Graduation Maddie has taken a job as a Traveling Leadership Consultant for Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity.


Victoria Whitwell is a senior at Texas State University pursuing a major in Public Relations with a minor in Business Administration. She loves to travel, eat delicious food and work out. With a passion for ministry, Victoria hopes to reach people wherever she is placed. She plans to go to grad school and change the world.


Brooke Wilhelm is from a little town called IMG_5318Mauriceville, that is just East of Beaumont, Texas. She is a junior at Texas State University that will be earning her degree in Marketing. She hopes to attend Law School at the University of Houston post graduate. Brooke adores her family and friends, especially her niece, nephew and Goddaughter. She is very outgoing and loves to socialize, but also loves downtime to her self. Brooke enjoys traveling, and cruising is a big thing among her family and friends. She grew up on a Ranch and takes pride in where she’s from! Brooke aspires to keep learning and growing as a person so that she can handle any obstacle that she may encounter while still aiming to make a positive impact on the lives that she comes into contact with everyday!
